Resilience Through Music: Community Resistance and Survival, presentation by Eric Gordon Jr. and Ivelisse DÍaz

These two experienced cultural workers will expose you to under-represented histories and give the audience their optimistic outlook on daily life and the shared struggle for survival.  
Ivelisse Díaz has taught, performed and shared Bomba music her whole life.  Bomba is a traditional music and dance genre from Puerto Rico which was brought to the island by African slaves in the 16th century. Ivelisse is a founding member and lead singer of the world-renowned group, Bomba con Buya, and director the female bomba and plena ensemble, Las BomPleneras.  In 2009, she cofounded La Escuelita Bombera de Corazon, a music school that combines art, education, and social justice.  known for her unique art, education prowess and community leadership, Ivelisse is a resilient and influential figure in the world of bomba and plena. 

Eric Gordon Jr. is a member of the Golden Eagles, a Mardi Gras Indian tribe of New Orleans, Louisiana. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the African American culture and the traditions of the New Orleans Black Indians, and how they have preserved their symbolic costumes and their musical traditions.
